Top Universities for Toronto STEM Students

Quick Answer

For Toronto STEM students, the strongest options are University of Toronto, Waterloo, McGill, McMaster, Queen’s, UBC, and select US schools. Each has a different admission profile. Strategy matters more than chasing a single brand name.

Most Toronto STEM-bound students hear the same three school names repeated everywhere: University of Toronto, Waterloo, and Princeton. The actual picture is more useful than that shortlist. There are about a dozen universities worth seriously considering, and which one is right depends on the program more than the school.

The realistic list of top STEM destinations

For Toronto students aiming at top tier STEM programs, here is the realistic shortlist of Canadian universities to consider, with the programs they are best known for.

University Strongest STEM areas Admission focus
University of Toronto Computer Science, Engineering Science, Life Sciences, Math Grades and supplementary applications
University of Waterloo Computer Science, Software Engineering, Math, Mechatronics Grades, AIF, and Euclid contest
McGill University Physics, Math, Biology, Engineering Grades primarily
McMaster University Engineering, Health Sciences, iSci Grades and supplementary applications
Queen’s University Engineering, Commerce, Health Sciences Grades and supplementary applications
UBC Engineering, Computer Science, Forestry Grades and personal profile
Western University Engineering, Medical Sciences, Computer Science Grades and supplementary applications

All of these are excellent schools. The right one depends on the student’s specific interests, the kind of learning environment they thrive in, and their willingness to relocate.

UofT vs Waterloo: the constant Toronto question

Almost every Toronto STEM student we work with eventually asks some version of this question. Here is the short answer.

Choose UofT for Computer Science if you want academic depth and you do not mind a large competitive cohort. Choose Waterloo for Computer Science if you want the famous co-op program and direct access to tech industry recruitment. Both produce graduates who succeed at the highest levels of the industry. They train students differently.

For Engineering, UofT Engineering Science is the most academically rigorous program in Canada. Waterloo Engineering is broader and more co-op driven. Different students will thrive in each.

Should Toronto students apply to US schools?

Yes, with caveats. The strongest Toronto students do apply to MIT, Stanford, Princeton, Harvard, Carnegie Mellon, and similar schools, and a few are admitted each year. The math is challenging. Acceptance rates at these schools are below 5 percent, and international student aid is limited at many of them.

For most students, a strategy of applying to two or three reach US schools, balanced with strong Canadian options, makes sense. Going all in on US schools without Canadian backups has cost more than one student a year of their life.

What to do from Grade 10 onward

The preparation timeline that consistently works:

  1. Grade 10. Build academic foundations. Take strong math and science courses. Start one extracurricular you can stay with through Grade 12.
  2. Grade 11. Take Advanced Functions and a Grade 12 science if scheduling allows. Start preparing for Euclid (for Waterloo) or AMC if your child is interested in contest math. Take the SAT or ACT for US options.
  3. Grade 12 fall. Submit applications. UofT, Waterloo, and most Ontario schools through OUAC. US applications through the Common App. Waterloo’s AIF is due in early November.
  4. Grade 12 winter. Final-grade push. Many admissions decisions are based on Grade 12 mid-year grades.

The university decision is large but not life-defining. Strong students do well from many different starting points. What matters most is finding the right fit and putting in the work to get there.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do you need a 95 average to get into UofT or Waterloo for STEM?

For the most competitive programs (UofT Engineering Science, Waterloo Computer Science and Software Engineering), admitted students typically have averages in the mid-90s. Some less competitive programs at the same schools admit students with averages in the high 80s.

Does the Euclid contest matter for Waterloo Math admissions?

Yes. Waterloo Math uses Euclid scores as part of the admission decision and for scholarship consideration. A strong Euclid score can meaningfully strengthen an application.

Are US universities worth applying to from Toronto?

For top students, yes, alongside strong Canadian options. Costs are higher and international student aid varies. A balanced application strategy that includes Canadian universities as the foundation makes the most sense for most families.

Does Exploring Scholar help with university preparation?

Yes. We focus on the academic side, including AP, IB, contest math, and SAT preparation. Many of our students go on to UofT, Waterloo, McGill, and top US universities.
