Ontario’s university application process confuses a lot of families because it runs on a separate system from most other provinces and has its own deadlines, grade calculations, and supplementary requirements. Here is a clear breakdown of how it works and what families should be doing at each stage.
How OUAC Works
OUAC (Ontario Universities’ Application Centre) is the single portal through which students apply to all Ontario universities. Students can apply to as many programs as they want — each application beyond the first carries a small additional fee. There is no central application essay; each university manages its own supplementary applications separately.
Universities receive applications through OUAC and then assess them using their own processes. Some programs send out early offers in December or January to strong applicants. Most programs make their main offers in late February through May. Offers are conditional on maintaining Grade 12 final marks, and conditional offers can be revoked if grades drop significantly.

How Universities Calculate Your Grade
Ontario universities use a “top 6” calculation: the six highest-scoring Grade 12 U or M courses are averaged together to produce the admission average. This means that a student taking 8 U-level courses has some protection — two weak marks can be dropped from the calculation.
Most competitive programs have required courses that must be in the top 6. Engineering programs require Grade 12 math and physics. Science programs require chemistry or biology depending on the major. If a required course mark is lower than the student’s other marks, it can drag the average down significantly. This is why course selection strategy in Grade 12 matters.
Supplementary Applications
Several programs require or strongly encourage supplementary applications: UofT’s various faculty applications, Rotman Commerce, Ivey AEO, Waterloo engineering and math (the AIF), and Schulich among others. These typically involve short essays, extracurricular documentation, or both.
Supplementary applications are evaluated by the admissions committee and can move an applicant above or below the grade cutoff. A student with a 90% average and a weak supplementary will often lose a spot to a student with an 88% average and a compelling supplementary. Start supplementary essays in September to have time for multiple drafts.
What to Do in Grade 11
Grade 11 marks appear on the OUAC application and some universities factor them into early assessment before Grade 12 marks are finalized. A strong Grade 11 record also qualifies students for entrance scholarships at several Ontario universities.
More importantly, Grade 11 is when students take the prerequisite courses for Grade 12. A student who struggles in Grade 11 chemistry is likely to struggle in Grade 12 chemistry, which appears in the top 6 for science programs. Addressing weaknesses in Grade 11 is almost always easier than trying to fix them in Grade 12 while managing the full application process at the same time.
