Choosing Between AP and IB in Toronto: A Guide for Parents

Quick Answer

AP works well for students who want depth in specific subjects and flexibility in their schedule. IB works well for students who want a structured, balanced workload across all subjects and a globally recognized diploma. Neither is harder than the other in absolute terms. The right fit depends on the student.

Most Toronto parents who are trying to decide between AP and IB are working from incomplete information. The internet is full of strong opinions and weak comparisons. We work with students in both programs every year. This is what is actually different between them, and how to think about which one fits your child.

How AP and IB actually differ

The Advanced Placement (AP) program is a collection of individual courses, each ending with one standardized exam. Students take whichever AP courses they want, in whichever order suits them. A student might take AP Calculus BC and AP Physics C in Grade 12 and no other APs. The flexibility is the point.

The International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (IB DP) is a structured two-year program. Students take six subjects across set categories, write the Extended Essay, complete the Theory of Knowledge course, and document Creativity, Activity, and Service. The whole thing is a single package and it produces a single diploma.

University credit Often yes for 4 or 5 Often yes for HL 6 or 7
Fit for specialists Excellent Limited (need breadth)
Fit for generalists Limited (no breadth requirement) Excellent

Which students do better in which program

After working with students in both, we have noticed clear patterns about who thrives where.

Students who do well in AP

  • Have one or two academic areas they want to go deep in (often STEM or economics)
  • Like flexibility and can self-manage
  • Want to keep room in their schedule for music, sports, or a part-time job
  • Are aiming at competitive US universities, where AP scores are highly visible

Students who do well in IB

  • Are strong across many subjects rather than just one or two
  • Handle structured deadlines well
  • Want a globally recognized diploma (useful for European or international university applications)
  • Are comfortable writing extended essays and doing research projects

What this looks like in Toronto specifically

In the GTA, AP is offered at most public and many private schools. IB is offered at a smaller set of designated schools, including Marc Garneau, Victoria Park CI, several private schools, and a number of suburban schools with authorized IB programmes. If your child is already in an IB school, they are usually best off completing the diploma. Switching out is often more disruptive than the IB workload itself.

For Ontario universities, both AP and IB are well recognized. University of Toronto, Waterloo, McMaster, Western, and Queen’s all award transfer credit for sufficient scores in either system. The differences are usually small.

What we see at Exploring Scholar

We tutor students in both. Our AP students often come for a single subject, hit one or two final exams hard, and walk away with the score they wanted. Our IB students often work with us over both years, because the program has so many moving pieces. The Internal Assessment alone can take a term to do well.

The right program is the one your child can do well in without falling apart. Both AP and IB can deliver excellent university outcomes. The question is which structure suits the student you actually have.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is IB harder than AP?

Neither is harder in absolute terms. IB has more breadth requirements and more sustained workload. AP can be intense in one or two subjects but allows more flexibility. The right answer depends on the student.

Do Canadian universities prefer AP or IB?

Neither. Top Canadian universities including UofT, Waterloo, McMaster, and Queen’s recognize both. They award transfer credit for AP scores of 4 or 5 and for IB HL scores of 6 or 7.

Can a student do both AP and IB?

It is possible but rarely a good idea. A full IB Diploma plus multiple AP exams is a heavy load. A more typical hybrid is IB Diploma plus one AP, often AP Calculus BC, to demonstrate additional math depth.

Does Exploring Scholar offer tutoring for both AP and IB?

Yes. We have instructors specialized in both. Several of them have served as AP exam readers, and several have marked IB papers. We support all major AP and IB subjects.
