IB English tutoring in Toronto and North York

Language and Literature SL and HL. Paper 1, Paper 2, the Individual Oral, and the Higher Level Essay.

IB English Language and Literature covers both literary texts and non-literary texts across a range of media and contexts. Students are assessed through two written papers, an Individual Oral, and at HL an additional essay. The Individual Oral in particular catches students off guard because it is a structured spoken assessment, not a written one, and requires specific preparation. Our instructors know the assessment criteria and work backwards from them.

What we cover

  • Paper 1: guided literary analysis of unseen texts
  • Paper 2: comparative essay on studied works
  • Individual Oral: structure, global issue selection, linking the works
  • HL Essay: choosing a text, developing an argument, meeting the formal requirements
  • Literary commentary technique
  • Non-literary text analysis
  • Global issues and conceptual framing
  • Essay writing under timed conditions
  • Marking criteria for each assessment component
  • Past paper practice and feedback
